French Bio Beach is a San Diego based organization aiming at promoting scientific exchange, networking and partnering between US and European Life Science communities with a focus on France. French Bio Beach was a project launched in 2006 in collaboration with the trade and economic affairs department of the French Embassy in Washington DC. The goal is to foster academic and business partnerships between San Diego’s entrepreneurial spirit and France’s expertise in the life sciences. During a conference of the French Export Committee, Dr. Stéphane Richard signed an agreement on March 1st, 2006 in Paris with the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industry. The agreement was signed in presence of Mme Christine Lagarde, the French Foreign Trade Minister with Mr. Jean-François Boittin Minister for Trade and Economic Affairs at the French Embassy in Washington D.C. Pursuant to this agreement, Dr. Stéphane Richard has liaised with the French biotech community in San Diego and promoted the French interests there. Since 2006, French Bio-Beach has participated in the organization of over 40 networking events in San Diego. The purpose of those events is to offer to the Franco-American Scientific community of the greater San Diego area opportunities to gather and thus to create a « virtual Biotech bridge » that encourage exchanges between France & USA. Trimatec competitiveness cluster promotes economic development of businesses through innovation in the field of clean and efficient industrial processes. The Trimatec network has 173 members in 3 French regions (Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Rhône-Alpes), with expertise in 4 major thematic areas: Production and value enhancement of algae biomass, applications of supercritical fluids, separation and membrane technologies and management of confined environments. The cluster helps businesses and laboratories through R&D projects’ support, certification and advice on funding. Within the last 10 years, Trimatec certificated 208 projects and raised 159 M€ in public funding.
The OPTITEC Competitiveness Cluster federates the stakeholders in photonics in the south-east of France, with more than 125 companies, representing an annual turnover of 1.3 billion euros and 10000 employees. In 6 years, 1 600 directly photonics related jobs have been created. Based in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Languedoc-Roussillon Regions, OPTITEC has awarded its label to more than 170 joint projects worth a total of 465 million euros and 100 million euros of subsidies. In addition to joint R&D projects through the “Outlook SMEs” programme, OPTITEC is committed to the further mission of developing an ecosystem of growth favourable for the development of SMEs.
The Regional Center for Innovation and Technological Transfer in Chemistry, Formulation and Materials, is the organization carrying the PRIDES NOVACHIM (Regional Cluster for Innovation and Development of Social Economy). It drives a collaborative network of companies and laboratories centered on innovation through chemistry. Its activity is based on 3 axis : Promote and facilitate innovation for SME Support companies faced with regulation changes (REACH, CLP…) and structural evolutions (NICT, Social and Environmental Responsibility, Export support, Economic Intelligence…) And finally work on improving the industry integration on two critical aspects : image and role of chemistry Support, advices and specific services are daily provided through a team of specialists
The Intervarsity incubator IMPULSE has been created, July 2000, after Universities from Aix-Marseille (AMU) and Avignon responded to the invitation to tender made by Ministry. It has been supporting and funding since all innovative business projects based on technology transfer from public research. These universities have been joined by French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in 2002, National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in 2005, Ecole Centrale and French Aerospace Lab (ONERA) in 2008, Institute of Research for Development (IRD) in 2009 and Ecole Nationale des Mines de St Etienne (ENM-SE) in 2010. IMPULSE is at the heart of a close networking between research laboratories, Carnot institutes, SATT, clusters and the regional agency for innovation. IMPULSE finances all projects linked with public research, and converts 80% of these projects into innovative companies. At the end of 2015, 151 projects have been financed and managed, leading to the creation of 126 companies on the western PACA region. These companies have created about 650 direct jobs, 1 700 indirect jobs and raised more than 173 million euros of private investments, demonstrating their attractiveness and soundness. Supported by the French Ministry of Research, the European Union, the PACA region, the départements of Bouches-du-Rhône and Vaucluse, the City of Marseille, Marseille Provence Métropole and the Communauté du Pays d’Aix, Impulse encourages innovation and creates economic value on the western PACA region.
The Paca-Est Business Incubator is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research for the French departments of Alpes-Maritimes and Var. Paca-Est Incubator was founded by and continues to receive support from the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, the University of Toulon, and INRIA Sophia-Méditerranée (National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control). The organization aims to develop skills and assist in transferring and commercializing technologies from university laboratories and public research organizations by creating innovative companies and high added value employment in the area.
